Carol J. Trimmer LL.B. (Hons) Hull, Call 1993 (admitted as a Solicitor 1979)

Carol Trimmer has specialised exclusively in Family law for over 35 years. She was initially a solicitor in a busy local practice where she became one of the earliest members of the Child Care Panel which was set up in 1984 to provide specialist representation for children and parents in proceedings brought by Local Authorities. In 1993 she transferred to the Bar to focus on court room advocacy.

Although Carol has extensive experience in all aspects of Family Law she now chooses to specialise exclusively in cases involving issues of child protection, whether they arise in the public or private law arena.

Carol believes passionately that parents and children deserve strong skilful representation at the most stressful time in their lives when the court is being asked to make decisions that will affect the future of the family, especially when permanent separation of a child from a parent is being considered by the court.

She can quickly establish a rapport with clients from all backgrounds including those with the most challenging of personal circumstances.  She has considerable experience of acting for clients with mental health problems, or who lack capacity, of working with interpreters and the hearing impaired. She acts for children who are of an age to give direct instructions and regularly acts for the Children's Guardian in complex cases.

Carol has particular expertise in handling cases involving complex medical issues and in challenging medical diagnoses. She has often acted as a Leading Junior with a Solicitor Advocate, or junior Counsel to assist her in cases where other parties have instructed Queens Counsel.  Her experience covers all aspects of alleged physical and emotional abuse of children including:

  • brain injury
  • sudden death
  • suffocation
  • failure to thrive
  • factitious illness
  • sexual abuse
  • burns
  • fractures
  • bruising
  • forced marriage

Carol also deals regularly with issues that arise after the making of a care order such as appeals, discharge or variation of orders, contact, placement orders and contested adoption.
