FIRST POST-LOCKDOWN MURDER TRIAL ON THE NORTH EASTERN CIRCUIT

17 August 2020

Four members of the criminal team have been involved in the first murder trial to take place in the North East since jury trials resumed following the C-19 lockdown.

Oliver Saxby QC was leading Julia Baggs for the Crown, Richard Wright QC was leading Paul Genney for the defence.

The trial took place in Sheffield Crown Court, before Mr Justice Goss and lasted 7 days.

Colin Cadamartreia stabbed Jarrad Marsh in the neck with a steak knife as Mr Marsh was dosing on a sofa. The knife severed a vein and an artery before puncturing Mr Marsh’s right lung. Mr Cadamartreia left Mr Marsh to bleed to death. During the course of the proceedings, Mr Cadamartreia raised various defences including accident, self-defence, lack of intent and loss of control.

Mr Cadamartreia was convicted last week of murder, and sentenced to Life Imprisonment with a Minimum Term of 20 years.
